The state’s seasonally adjusted September 2022 unemployment rate was 3.6 percent, increasing 0.1 of a percentage point from August’s revised rate. The national rate decreased 0.2 of a percentage point to 3.5 percent.
North Carolina’s unemployment rate decreased 0.9 percentage points from a year ago. The number of people employed decreased 760 over the month to 4,944,068 and increased 180,599 over the year. The number of people unemployed increased 4,699 over the month to 184,220 and decreased 42,513 over the year.
Seasonally adjusted Total Nonfarm employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, increased 17,400 to 4,819,500 in September. Major industries experiencing increases were Leisure & Hospitality Services, 10,300; Professional & Business Services, 6,700; Education & Health Services, 2,200; Other Services, 1,000; Construction, 800; Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 200; and Mining & Logging, 100. Major industries experiencing decreases were Government, 2,200; Financial Activities, 700; Manufacturing, 700; and Information, 300.
Since September 2021, Total Nonfarm jobs increased 202,800 with the Total Private sector increasing by 198,900 and Government increasing by 3,900. Major industries experiencing increases were Professional & Business Services, 57,900; Leisure & Hospitality Services, 53,500; Education & Health Services, 27,800; Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 17,000; Manufacturing, 11,600; Construction, 9,600; Financial Activities, 9,000; Other Services, 8,000; Information, 4,500; and Government, 3,900. Mining & Logging employment remained unchanged over the year.
The next unemployment update is scheduled for Wednesday, November 2, 2022 when the county unemployment rates for September 2022 will be released.
