As NC Governor Roy Cooper has issued a state of emergency due predicted winter storms, he stated, “North Carolinians should pay close attention to their local weather forecast over the next few days, and make sure they are personally prepared before Saturday afternoon.” The National Weather Service in Wilmington has shared their weekend weather update with details.

There is a winter storm watch for Bladen, Robeson, Marlboro, Dillon, Darlington, Florence, and Marion counties. Small accumulations of freezing rain will create hazardous travel conditions in the area. Precipitation will begin early Sunday, before sunrise, and will continue throughout the morning.

In addition to freezing rain, two to three inches of rain is expected to fall in eastern NC, potentially leading to minor flooding in poor-drainage areas.

Department of Transportation workers started brining roads Thursday in preparation for the storm and expect to complete that work on Friday. Transportation officials recommend staying off the roads once travel conditions deteriorate. Read more: governor-cooper-urges-preparation-in-advance-of-winter-storm-and-signs-state-of-emergency.
