Having been retired many years, it is a privilege to reflect on my service as Clerk of Superior Court in Bladen County. So much has changed with new technology and updated systems, but so much of the work remains, at its core the same.

I tried to instill in my staff members the importance of serving the citizens of Bladen County with the best possible attitude. Our best work was making sure people who were often afraid or emotionally distraught or unsure of how to manage in difficult seasons of life had found someone who was genuinely interested in being helpful.

Reflecting on those who served with me, Althea Weaver was a team member who always brought her best “whatever it takes” attitude to the office. Even on difficult or busy days, she wore a smile and made every attempt to help anyone who came asking for help or looking for answers. Whether it was attorneys in need of assistance with filings or someone needing to pay a fine, she treated everyone with respect and worked hard to be sure they felt heard. She worked at various times during our service together in every department in the office, and I don’t ever remember her saying something wasn’t in her job description or that she didn’t want to learn something new. No matter how mundane or how complex the task, when asked to do something new or different, she most often just nodded, smiled, and said, “I’ll try.”

As someone who has retried, and thoroughly enjoyed retirement, I’ll admit I admire Althea’s willingness to move back into a role of serving as she seeks election of Bladen County Clerk of Superior Court. Her belief that everyone who can serve should serve is reflected in her coming back to use her leadership and experience to ensure the citizens of our county have someone ready to step in ready to move ahead on day one.

Wishing you all the best, Althea!
