For long time residents of Bladen, remember a headline years ago?….”Legless, one arm man escapes from lawman at Bladen County Courthouse”. Dick Hilburn was the man, he was a talented, some would say temperamental resident of Bladenboro. He lived about 100 yards from downtown Bladenboro, rode on a skateboard, pushed himself along with his only hand. He was an artist who was busy when at home, lettering company vehicles. He was a part of a traveling show, along with his spouse, and in his later years was joined by a young man who had many of his features, legless, one armed.
Just had him on my mind for some time, not sure why, except the headline in the newspaper. Seems he was facing some minor charge, was apparently summoned to court, after waiting for a while, decided he had had all the court he needed, so he departed the scene, if my memory is correct, hired a cab to take him home. Needless to say he was captured and returned. Made a great headline.
