Thoughts While Shaving

Bladen County Commissioners meet today at 6:30 p.m. in their meeting room in the courthouse.  Included on the agenda is ‘Consider scheduling of a Special Meeting regarding the Kelly Dike.”  Kelly area folks suffered greatly during the last storm when the dike system failed.  The meeting is open to the public.

Local temps from mid 20s a week ago to 80 on Sunday.  More warm temps today with high expected in the low 70s with clouds and some sunshine.

A couple of special primary elections are on the upcoming agenda.  Checking the NC State Board of Elections website a Special primary election for voters in the 3rd District Congressional seat (Walter Jones seat) and a Special election for voters in the 9th Congressional district on May 14th.  Interested in running for either, check with NC State Board of Elections.

Candidates for Municipal Elections begin filing Friday, July 2019.

For long time residents of Bladen, remember a headline years ago?….”Legless, one arm man escapes from lawman at Bladen County Courthouse”.  Dick Hilburn was the man, he was a talented, some would say temperamental resident of Bladenboro.  He lived about 100 yards from downtown Bladenboro, rode on a skateboard, pushed himself along with his only hand.  He was an artist who was busy when at home, lettering company vehicles.  He was a part of a traveling show, along with his spouse, and in his later years was joined by a young man who had many of his features, legless, one armed.

Just had him on my mind for some time, not sure why, except the headline in the newspaper.  Seems he was facing some minor charge, was apparently summoned to court, after waiting for a while, decided he had had all the court he needed, so he departed the scene, if my memory is correct, hired a cab to take him home.  Needless to say he was captured and returned.  Made a great headline.

In every success story, you will find someone who has made a courageous decision.  Peter F. Drucker
