Thoughts While Shaving
Spread the love

Thoughts While ShavingNorms are out the window, mostly due to the weather.

Utilities still out of order for many: a visit to the grocery store is frustrating: shelves bare (produce, meats, dairy).  Saw an elderly couple at a gas station frustrated in their efforts to get to Burgaw, (I assumed their home) no route available, according to him, due to road closures.

Had an elderly friend (’bout my age) in Durham, been staying with family, called and ask about roads in this area as he attempted to travel to his home in Brunswick County.  He was dealing with closures on 95, 242, 701, 131, 87, finally followed 301 to St. Pauls, 20 to 87 to 131, last I heard he was in the Bladenboro area.  After checking on him a time or two decided I may be causing more harm than good.  Hope he made it home near Bolivia after a day of attempting to dodge road closures.

Son #2 has attempted to visit, usually a one hour trip from near Dunn. Unable to complete the trip on 2 consecutive days due to road closures, mostly water over the roadways.

Have friends from White Lake who moved to a country location temporarily due to no utilities and hot weather.

Young man ‘for hire’ cleaning up (trees, etc.) suffering from heat exhaustion, cramps before returning to complete the job.

Cape Fear River cresting and locals warned of possible evacuation.

Bet others have such stories, most, if not all, weather related.

As my mom would say, this too shall pass…..we are on the mend, I hope.

And still, despite the best efforts of numerous dedicated, hard-working crews, nearly 10% of Four County’s Bladen County users, still without service, that would be about 1100 and system-wide, over 8,500 still to be served.

Duke Power serves nearly 9,000 customers in Bladen County.  They still have outages in 7 locations affecting 72 customers.

Difference is Duke Power serves municipalities and along major roadways, for the most part, while Four County serves all that’s left, including the most rural areas.

The outage info is from both company’s website.  Four County and Duke Power are ‘doing all in they can’ to restore service.

Bet you know of other such stories.

We will survive, but hope these hundred year storms cease their bi-annual visits.
