Thoughts While Shaving

Thoughts While ShavingHad a great Saturday.  I attended the 110th Annual meeting of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners in Durham, and enjoy every minute.

I know, some say just another meeting and I say phooey, don’t have any idea what you are talking about.  Democrat and Republican commissioners from all across the Tar Heel State meet, and deal with issues. Real issues that have a drastic affect on 10 million North Carolinians.

County governments deliver services, not just talk about it.  Think about it, how many federal or state schools have you heard about, same for health departments, social services, libraries and much more.  I repeat, county governments deliver services–some partially paid for by all branches of government, some by the county alone, but all under the general control of county officials, following state and federal laws, rules and regulations.

NCACC is the best example I know where commissioners, D’s and R’s, work together to determine priorities for the good of their citizens and deliver them to the Legislature.

I have attended over 40 such conferences, first 7 as a Bladen County Commissioner in the mid 70s and early 80s, 25 more as a staff person and have been invited back 10 times since retirement.  They continue to work together. Differences? Yes, but every voice raised is heard–mediation takes place if necessary–and a final vote and then support by all 100 counties, for the goals approved.

Folks can sit home and complain about what happens in the Legislature, or get involved and work for the betterment of all.  Not every issue is approved, and some maybe should not be, but you can rest assured, every issue approved as a NCACC Legislative Goal has been debated, and approved by the membership at a statewide meeting.

I am proud of how commissioners statewide work together.  Think it should be that way at the state and national level.

I’ve always believed in local government.  Chuck Fleischmann

I know some people don’t like America very much, but the one thing it’s very good on is local government.  Heather Brooke

Despite the enormous role that local government plays in our daily lives, the constitution makes not one mention of it.  Anthony Albanese

I am not about to let the people who so mismanaged the state budget now try to manage local government.  Jim Doyle
