The sound of Ospreys could be heard overhead in Elizabethtown this week. Some residents were asking questions about what is taking place and reported feeling vibrations as the aircraft passed overhead as they headed to the airport.

When asked about all of the air traffic, Elizabethtown Town Manager Eddie Madden said, “The Ospreys are training at the airport.”

The Ospreys were flying training patterns over the county and practicing landing at the airport. The military use the airport periodically for training missions and fuel stops.

The Osprey aircraft is used by the United States Marine Corps and US Navy and they can transport up to 24 combat troops or 20,000 pounds of cargo, according to Air & Space magazine. The magazine reports the Osprey has a vertical take off similar to a helicopter and  it can fly into areas that have traditionally only been accessible by a helicopter. It can also fly at a faster speed than a helicopter, according to the magazine.
