HillstreetFire2One resident in Elizabethtown received a scare on Wednesday morning after an attempt to clean the oven lead to a small fire. A house at 613 South Hill Street was spared from damage as the fire was small and contained inside the oven.

Elizabethtown Fire Chief Nick West said the resident of the home activated the oven’s self cleaning mode on Wednesday morning and during the cleaning cycle a small fire ocurred inside the stove. He said because the oven was in the self cleaning mode, the oven door was locked preventing it from being opened and removing the burning material.

“Something inside the stove was still burning, so we put it in the back yard (until the material cools down enough to open the door),” said Chief Nick West.

Firefighters also installed a new smoke detector for the homeowner. Chief West said that is a new effort on behalf of the fire department encouraging citizens to install smoke detectors and/or replace smoke detectors that no longer work correctly.

Chief West said if you do not have a smoke detector or would like more information about installing a smoke detector, you can contact the Elizabethtown Fire Department at 910-862-4586.
