Cadets with the Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy spent last week learning how to safely rappel.

Sergeant Gary Turlington, of The Bladen County Sheriffs Office Specialized Training Unit, took 22 cadets from the Paul R Brown Leadership Academy to Fayetteville on Thursday to participate in a rappelling exercise. The event was hosted by the Stoney Point Fire Department and the 50-foot Training Tower was utilized.

“The exercise is intended to build self-confidence in these students by affording them an opportunity to do something unique and something that takes substantial self-fortitude,” said Sgt. Turlington.

He explained that it is inherently unnatural to step off of a solid object 50 feet above the ground with the awareness that you must trust your equipment and abilities to overcome fear and trepidation.  Sgt. Turlington added, this exercise builds esprit-de-corps and the ability to work together as a team to overcome the significant obstacle before them.

“The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office Specialized Training Unit labors to develop relationships with young participants and to demonstrate that great things may be accomplished with some sweat and deliberate determination,” said Sgt. Turlington.
