Students at the Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy learned about landing zone operations and ground force extraction on Friday morning at the school. Instructor Gary Turlington said the training session was for the ROTC students.

This was a community outreach from the sheriff’s office in response to a request from the Paul Brown Leadership Academy to assist in their para-military training in establishing a helicopter landing zone and ground personnel extraction during their Search and Rescue Training,” said Turlington.

He added that the exercise was part of a training session that is important in teaching and instilling the core values of the Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy.  Those values include responsibility for conduct and actions, leadership in managing movement and actions of others, and integrity through the application of the lessons learned in a practical setting.

Turlington said the training session was successful and the students excelled in their performance.

It went exceptionally well! The students conducted themselves enthusiastically with learned professionalism, despite their youth and inexperience,” Turlington.

Turlington said in addition to skills that will prove invaluable to them in the future, the students also got to interact with members of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, NC Park Rangers, and a member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol in an instructional setting.
