FAYETTEVILLE – Clarkton native Kenneth “Pete” Jones has been named the winner of the 2023 Dick Knox Distinguished Service Award by the Southeastern Softball Umpires Association. Jones was presented the award Sunday afternoon by Errol Daniels at the NCHSAA Softball State Rules Clinic.

Jones, who played football and baseball at Clarkton High School in the mid-1980’s, has been a NCHSAA football, basketball and softball official for 23 years. For the past 30 years Jones has served as the District 9 Umpire-in-Chief for Dixie Youth Baseball.

The Knox award reads, “Presented in recognition of devoted service and involvement with young student athletes of our state. Your years of service and dedication are recognized and deeply appreciated. The lives you have touched during your career are a tribute to the positive influence of high school athletics.”

Daniels, the regional supervisor for the Southeastern Sports Officials Association’s football, basketball and softball officials, praised Jones commitment through the years and his willingness to come back and help with basketball the last 2 seasons when there has been a shortage of officials.

The award is named for Dick Knox who served as supervisor of officials and deputy executive director for the NCHSAA. Knox is in the NCHSAA Hall of Fame.
