KIRO: On Tuesday morning, Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil came out of his burrow at Gobbler’s Knob and saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter.

Are you hoping for six more weeks of winter or an early spring?  Well, tomorrow, our favorite groundhog will let us know just what to expect!

Groundhog Day derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den, and winter will persist for six more weeks; but if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early.

Being brought over from German-speaking areas where the badger is the forecasting animal, it appears that the holiday is an enhanced version of the lore that clear weather on the Christian Holiday Candlemas is an indication of a prolonged winter.

Do any of you have any Groundhog Day traditions?  Do you watch the ceremony?  Pull out an old VHS of the 1993 movie of the same name?
