Tommy Rains has been named as the National Wildlife Control Operator’s Association’s Outstanding Operator for 2016. The award came during the Association’s Wildlife Expo in Memphis, Tenn. last week where Rains was also a speaker. Rains operates Cape Fear Wildlife Control, LLC and he also works at Bladen Community College where he serves as Counselor/Coordinator of Testing, Disability and Veterans Services.

When asked about his thoughts upon learning he had won the honor, “I thought I was hearing it wrong. It’s a nationwide organization and I had gotten some minor awards. I won the Superior Service Award through Angie’s List,” said Rains.

He said he is only the second operator in North Carolina to receive the certification of Wildlife Control Professional through the NWCOA. His son, Ben, earned his certification at his year’s Wildlife Expo. Rains said he has attended the Expo each year since 2011.

“I love helping people and I’m an animal lover as well. This job, it is bringing me so much satisfaction,” said Rains.

He said he got his love for wildlife and helping wildlife when he grew up. Rains said he was a trapper at 9 years old and at the age of 14 he caught 150 muskrats.

Rains siad now he enjoys helping other Wildlife Control Operators. He said sometimes they will call him asking for information or ideas on how to handle situations and he is able to assist them.

The NWCOA provides support and education to those who are involved with wildlife management and control. The group is a nonprofit organization. They offer certification program for both members and nonmembers.
