The 2025 Regional Chicken Project is now accepting registrations, offering an exciting opportunity for participants to raise and exhibit laying hen chicks. This year, the available breeds are Welsummers, known for their brown eggs with speckles, and Buff Orpingtons, reliable brown egg layers.

Participants are encouraged to register early as the number of chicks is limited, and registration operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Schools can purchase birds by the deadline and register youth participants by February 7, 2025. The project caters to 4-H members, FFA students, or youth in agricultural education classes, aged 5 to 18 as of January 1, 2025.

Key Details:

• Hen Chicks Deadline: January 10, 2025

• Broiler Chicks Deadline: February 7, 2025

• Cost: Welsummer chicks are $4.50 each, and Buff Orpingtons are $4.00 each.

• Registration Fee: $5 per participant.

Participants may purchase up to six laying hen chicks in any combination of breeds, with a minimum order of two chicks.

How to Register:

• Payments can be made via cash, check, or money order, payable to the Bladen County Extension Office.

• Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

• Forms and payment must be submitted by 5 PM on the deadline date.

Participants will also need to attend mandatory training sessions, raise their chicks until the show on May 6, 2025, and complete a poultry record book to be eligible for exhibition and prizes.

The 2025 Regional Chicken Project is an excellent opportunity for youth to gain hands-on experience raising poultry, building skills in responsibility, and showcasing their efforts in a supportive environment. Early registration is advised to secure your spot in this enriching educational initiative.
