Bladen County Relay for Life will take place Friday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. at the athletic field at the Elizabethtown Middle School. The goal for this year’s event is $100,000 and the Bladen County Relay for Life website shows, as of Monday, $51,209.84 has been raised thus far.

“We invite care givers, cancer survivors and their families and friends to come out and enjoy the festivities,” said Bladen County Relay for Life Chairwoman Angeline Powell. The theme for this year’s event is Dr. Seuss and each team is encouraged to use a Dr. Seuss book to create their campsite theme. Food will also be available for purchase.

The opening ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the Survivors’ Lap. Cancer survivors will be honored at 5 p.m. under the tent. Ms. Powell said during the tribute, the survivors will receive their T-shirts and gifts from Relay for Life. Live entertainment is scheduled to take place on the stage throughout the event, according to Powell.

The Luminaria Ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. and luminaries can still be purchased for $10 each. The purple bags represent care givers and the white bags are in memory or honor of cancer survivors. Powell said the Hush Angels will make a circle of the track before the Luminaria Ceremony to let everyone know when it is about to start.

Powell said there will be prizes for Best Campsite, Best Food, Best Educational Booth, Top Five Team Fundraising, and Top Five Individuals Fundraising. She said one difference this year is the awards will not be given out at the Relay event but instead will be presented at the Event Wrap-up Meeting which will take place at a later date. Powell said the main reason for this is that many teams will turn in their money following the Relay event.
