East Bladen Coach Robby Priest was honored to be chosen as an assistant coach for this year’s Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas football game, but unforeseen health issues have limited his participation in this week’s Shrine Bowl activities.

Priest had surgery to remove cancer last Tuesday and was in the hospital until Sunday.

“The Shrine Bowl people have been great about it,” said Coach Priest. “They told me that I would be first on the list next year for a spot on the staff. They told me that if I was able that I could come to the game, be on the sideline or if it is too cold, go up to the press box.”

The decision on whether Coach Priest will attend will probably be made Friday. “I want to go see Caleb (Strait) play, but I have a doctor’s appointment Friday. He will have a lot to say about it,” said Priest. “I feel well enough to watch. I am getting out some, but that 4-hour ride (to the game) will be hard.”

Coach Priest shared that his hospital room was full of players, coaches and other supporters during his stay there.

Strait, a 2-way starter on the offensive and defensive line for the Eagles, is a member of the North Carolina all-star team.
