Road closure may start before March 15

LUMBERTON – A new bridge is on the way in Robeson County.

The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded a $564,029 contract to The Tara Group of Lumberton Inc. to replace the North Broadridge Road bridge over Tenmile Branch, a creek south of Lumberton.

While the narrow, 63-year-old bridge is safe, it has wooden components below the concrete deck that require more frequent maintenance. The new structure will be wider and meet today’s traffic needs.

The contractor will begin the project by closing the road before March 15 and demolishing the bridge. The new bridge is expected to open about six months later.

This was one of eight road and bridge projects recently awarded by the department. They were worth about $110.6 million, about $20.2 million under engineer estimates.
