LUMBERTON – Lumberton rallied in the fourth inning and defeated West Bladen 6-2 Monday in the Robeson County Slugfest Baseball Tournament.

The Knights threatened early as sophmore Dawson Bryan drilled a double that one-hopped the leftfield fence, and sophmore Logan West ripped a single through the left side. West Bladen loaded the bases with one out but failed to score.

Senior Trey Storms drew a lead-off walk in the Knight second, raced to third on a throwing error, and scored when West banged a one-hopper off the thirdbaseman’s chest.

Bryan walked in the Knight fourth inning, stole second and scored when senior Scott Bowen dumped a double just inside the rightfield line for a 2-0 West Bladen lead.

Bowen had held the Pirate batters hitless until the fourth when 2 walks, 2 hits, a hit batter and a throwing error produced 4 runs and a 4-2 Lumberton lead. Caleb Wilkerson’s 2-run single tied the game, and the error plated two more runs.

Wilkerson and Kris Allen started the Pirate sixth inning with singles, and a trio of walks forced home two more runs.

West batted 2-4 with a run batted in for the Knights. Bryan doubled and scored a run, sophmore Jake Butler slammed a double and Bowen doubled home a run. Jeremy Pait and David Valenta connected for one hit each. Storms scored a run.

Bowen pitched 5.1 innings and allowed 6 runs – 4 earned – on 4 hits, 4 walks and 2 hit batters while striking out nine. Junior Derrick Long relieved in the sixth and secured the final two outs allowing a walk and striking out one.

“Errors, walks and too many men left on base,” said Knight Coach Kim Cain. The Knights left 8 runners on base in the first 4 innings.

West Bladen will return to action on April 10th at home against Red Springs.
