South Robeson erupted for 5 runs in the third inning and went on to defeat West Bladen 7-1 Tuesday in the third-place game of the Robeson County Slugfest Softball Tournament.

The Lady Knights grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Morgan Sweeney walked, stole second base, moved to third on Nicole Wyatt’s fly ball and scored when sophmore Laikyn Pait laced a single to right-centerfield.

The Lady Mustangs capitalized on 5 hits and a walk to plate the 5 runs in the third inning.

West Bladen tried to answer in the bottom of the inning as senior Amber Bills drew a walk and Wyatt cracked a single. A fielder’s choice forced Bills at third.

Sophmore Kassidy Anderson smacked a single to load the bases, but a force-out at the plate ended the inning.

South Robeson tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Lady Knights mounted another threat in the seventh, when Bills singled and Pait walloped a double to right-centerfield, but the Mustangs retired the next batter to secure the victory.

Pait topped the West Bladen hitters with a double, 2 singles and a run batted in. Sophmore Sophia Singletary batted 2-3, and sophmore Jenna Dove slammed a fourth-inning double. Anderson, Wyatt and Bills added a single each to the 9-hit Lady Knight attack.

Junior Micaela Hunt batted 2-4 and keyed the 5-run third-inning with a 2-run double. Junior Cangela Murphy also finished 2-4 with a double.

Freshman Destiny Strickland went the distance in the circle to pick up the win for South Robeson. Wyatt struck out 8 but walked 5 for the Lady Knights.

West Bladen, now 5-5, will resume Four County Conference play at home against Clinton on Tuesday.
