The Elizabethtown Rotary Club learned about local history and grave marking on Wednesday during their luncheon meeting. Layton Dowless addressed the club and talked about his experience in learning about how to locate and mark Revolutionary War period graves.

Many of us have a Patriot ancestor but many have not had their graves marked with headstones denoting their service. Dowless said he can assist you with that service. He explained he can help you in locating the grave and ordering and setting a gravestone in place.

Over the years, Dowless said he has gotten his grandchildren involved and each grandchild has adopted a cemetery. He said they place flags on the graves of veterans to denote their service. Flags have to be replaced about every 6 months, said Dowless.

Dowless said when he places a stone on a grave, he has a notebook where he records the information about the grave and any circumstances regarding the grave. He said in the event the cemetery does not allow for a headstone, he will place a foot stone on the grave, instead.

He also regaled Rotary Club members with stories about local history and cemeteries.
