The Elizabethtown Rotary Club awarded scholarships to three high school seniors and one Bladen Community College student this year. Three of those students attended a luncheon at Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery on Wednesday and spoke about their future plans.

The first student to speak was Janaja McKoy who graduated recently from the Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy. She plans to attend UNC-Pembroke in the fall and major in Psychology.

“Psychology has always been one of my passions,” said McKoy. “I aspire to help people to be and feel better.”

She hopes to be able to help others be able to achieve their goals.

The East Bladen High School scholarship recipient was Jacob Barber who was accompanied by his father, George Barber. He plans to attend NC State University and pursue a degree in Plant and Soil Science and possibly earn a minor in Horticulture.

Barber said after he completes his college degree he plans to return to Bladen County and take over the family business.

The West Bladen High School recipient was Kyle Gause but he was unable to attend the luncheon.

The Bladen Community College scholarship recipient was Bethany Davis. She was accompanied to the luncheon by her parents, Twyla and Dale Davis, and her brother, Jeremy Davis, who received a Rotary scholarship himself three years ago.

Bethany Davis plans to purse an Associate of Arts degree while attending Bladen Community College and after completing her Associate’s degree plans to transfer to Gardner-Webb University to pursue a degree in American Sign Language.
