The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating after an early morning fire destroyed a Duplin County church. The fire at Rose Hill United Methodist Church was reported by a neighbor at 8 a.m. Monday.

The Rose Hill United Methodist Church located at 314 East Church Street, Rose Hill, was constructed in the 1920s. According to the church’s website, the church was originally founded under a brush arbor in 1895/6. A wooden church was built a few years later and the current sanctuary, which burned on Monday, was constructed in 1920. The fellowship hall, which suffered smoke and water damage, was constructed in the 1980s, according to the church website.

Duplin County Emergency Management has said the sanctuary is a total loss but the fellowship hall may be able to be repaired.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
