The first race in the Coastal Carolina Off-Road Series (CCORS) 2017 season is scheduled Sunday at Browns Creek Nature Park and Bike Trail in Elizabethtown. The event is hosted by Cape Fear Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association.

“We’re expecting to have about 100 people,” said Greg Brinson, who is president of Cape Fear SORBA. “We have catergories for first time racers and for more advanced racers.”

Among those expected Sunday is professional racer Robert “The Beard” Marion from Mount Airy.

Races will start and end in a field across the street from the Curtis L. Brown Airport, which gives spectators a good view of some of the racing, Brinson said. There will be plenty of parking.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with a kids race at noon and other races beginning at 1 p.m. Entry fee ranges between $15 and $30, depending on the category. There is no registration fee for the kids race ages 12 and under.

Browns Creek Nature Park and Bike Trail opened in 2014. The approximate six-mile loop features climbs, switchbacks, jumps and obstacles.

The CCORS Series is a group effort between Cape Fear SORBA, ECVelo, CCVelo, and the Down East Cyclists to promote trails and raise money for each club. The six race series takes place on each of the clubs home courses throughout the season. Other races are scheduled in Greenville on Feb. 19, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on March 19, Jacksonville on April 9, Winnabow on April 23 and Wilmington on May 7.
