On June 28th, Bladen County’s senior citizens will have an afternoon to remember – they are going to prom.

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the county’s seniors will meet at the Senior Center in Elizabethtown and dance the afternoon away. There will be music from when most of the participants were young adults, catered food, and a photographer.

Carol Mitchell, the Senior Center Director for the Bladen County Department of Aging, said, “The prom is such a big thing in people’s lives, people who go to the prom never forget it. They describe it as one of the best times of their lives. We want to recreate some of those memories, or for those who didn’t get to go to their prom, we want to give them that experience.”

The prom will be held at the Senior Center and up to 160 people could be attending.

The Bladen Crisis Center is also getting involved with bringing this event together by gathering prom supplies that have been donated to them in the past. The seniors will be able to go to the Crisis Center and have exclusive pick from the items to help make their time at prom all the more special.

The participants will need to RSVP by June 22.

The senior center is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located on McKay St in Elizabethtown. They offer daily activities to seniors 60 years old or older. Adult coloring, bingo and chair aerobics are among the member’s favorite activities.

The center is on a donation only basis and accepts new applicants for membership at all times. To complete an application, go by Carol Mitchell’s office at the Senior Center.

There is also a free fitness center open to the general public seniors, as well as a library and computer center. The fitness center includes treadmills, bikes, an elliptical and even a television.

The Senior Center is also looking for volunteers. If interested, contact Carol Mitchell at 910-872-6331.

“We want these seniors to be able to hold on to these memories and look back and enjoy,” said Mitchell.
