Staff Report
Bladen Community College is bringing the gold standard to its local community this summer with a ServSafe Food Safety Course on June 3rd, 5th, and 10th from 5 PM to 9 PM. That’s 12 hours of life-saving knowledge, and yes, they’ll cover more than just “don’t lick the raw chicken.”
Whether you’re a five-star chef or just someone who microwaves frozen pizza with flair, food safety is something you rely on every single day. And behind the scenes, a quiet hero is working hard to keep you—and your stomach—out of danger: ServSafe.
Developed by the National Restaurant Association, the ServSafe program has become the gold standard for food safety training in the U.S., and it’s more than just a certificate. It’s a comprehensive methodology that helps food handlers, managers, and even casual kitchen crusaders learn how to keep food safe from farm to fork.
What’s in the ServSafe Secret Sauce?
The ServSafe program breaks food safety down into easily digestible lessons—pun absolutely intended.
Topics include:
-
Proper food storage and handling
-
Time and temperature controls
-
Cleaning and sanitizing protocols
-
Personal hygiene practices
-
How to prevent cross-contamination
It also helps participants recognize the subtle signs of foodborne illness risks before they become headline news.
Why This Matters for Everyone
According to the CDC, 1 in 6 Americans gets sick from foodborne illnesses each year. That’s nearly 48 million people. The ServSafe program is designed to slash that number by educating the very people responsible for handling your food—whether it’s your favorite line cook, the lunch lady, or your own teenage kid working their first job at the burger joint.
In other words, when food workers take ServSafe seriously, you’re less likely to end your dinner date hugging a porcelain bowl.
Not Just for Professionals
Though ServSafe is essential for restaurant staff and managers, anyone who eats or cooks can benefit. With courses offered at community colleges like Bladen Community College, it’s never been easier to sharpen your skills—and your knives—safely.
Bladen Community College’s offering is taught by a Registered ServSafe Proctor and Certified ServSafe Instructor, so you’re not just learning from a textbook—you’re getting real-world knowledge from a certified pro.
