NC-Forest-Service-ShieldA woods fire sparked by lightning on Sunday is contained and the NC Forest Service is continuing to monitor the situation, according to Michael Hanson.  The fire burned about 30 acres of land.

“Some peat is still burning,” said Hanson. “We’ll be monitoring it until we get sufficient rainfall.”

He said the forest service and several area fire departments were on the scene doing some “mop up” operations on Wednesday.

On Sunday when the fire was initially reported, Kelly Fire Department, Rowan Fire Department, White Lake Fire Department, Elizabethtown Fire Department, Bay Tree Lakes Fire Department, Hickory Grove Fire Department, the Bladen County Fire Marshal’s Office, Singletary Lake State Parks, Bladen County EMS and the NC Forestry Service all responded to the location. 

The crews worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control.

On Wednesday, the NC Forest Service, Dublin Fire Department, Bay Tree Lakes Fire Department, White Lake Fire Department all assisted in the “mop up” operations.

Hanson said that no air support was needed for the fire.
