Smithfield Foods’ Tar Heel plant was recently awarded the 2015 Guardian of the Envirothon Award by the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Envirothon is a program that pits high school and middle school teams competing against each other utilizing their knowledge of natural resources and ecology in a field day-type event, according to the NC Department of Agriculture.

Smithfield was recognized for its support of the program statewide.

According to the NC Department of Agriculture, the Envirothon event consists of stations that include the subjects of wildlife, aquatics, forestry, soils and current environmental issues. The stations will be set up outdoors and each team will be tested on the subject at each station. The team with the highest score is declared the state winner, according to the NC Department of Agriculture.

The date for the 2016 NC State Envirothon is scheduled for Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30, at Cedarock Park in Alamance County. For more information about Envirothon or how your school can compete, click here.
