Bladen County Emergency Management Director Bradley Kinlaw said that the county has not experienced any major issues with Winter Storm Jonas. However, with temperatures set to plunge below freezing for another night, Kinlaw said roads could become treacherous.

“DOT has been out all day and they are saying the roads look pretty good,” said Kinlaw. “We expect that to deteriorate as temperatures drop back to below freezing.”

He asked that anyone who does not absolutely have to travel, to stay off the roads overnight.

Kinlaw many of the areas of the county received little ice while the northern portions of Bladen County around the Tar Heel area were reporting ice on trees.

The storm forced area schools to close for Friday and many athletic events were moved to Thursday night. Many events scheduled for Saturday have also been postponed.

Bladen County Schools announced the postponement of the scheduled Driver’s Ed class to take place Saturday at Elizabethtown Middle School; the RA/GA Basketball games scheduled for Saturday have also been postponed as have the Bladen County Parks and Recreation games scheduled for the King Street gym.

The Carolina Civic Center in Lumberton also announced the postponement of the Balsam Range Concert. The show has been rescheduled to Feb. 27 and all tickets will be honored and there will be no refunds.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the county until noon on Saturday as National Weather Service Meteorologist Steve Pfaff said that areas from Lumberton, to Elizabethtown and Atkinson could see more winter precipitation overnight Friday and into Saturday morning.

Kinlaw said that while the county dodged a bullet with the ice storm, the county is still not out of the woods yet as snow is forecast to arrive in the area overnight Friday and into Saturday morning.

The forecast shows a 40 percent chance of a wintry mix for Saturday with a high of 34 degrees and a low of 27. Sunday is forecast to be sunny with a high of 43 degrees.
