ELIZABETHTOWN – East Bladen rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat South Brunswick 16-14 Wednesday night in non-conference softball action.
The Lady Eagles trailed 14-12 entering their final at-bat. Sophmore Abbie Cross and junior Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson cracked singles to start the inning. Freshman Kayleigh Raynor reached base on an error, and junior Erica McKoy’s single scored Cross.
Senior Kaley Smith belted a double to left-centerfield that drove in Moore-Peterson, Raynor and McKoy and ended the game.
South Brunswick grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Lady Eagles answered with 3 runs in their half. Raynor, McKoy and Smith began the inning with singles. All three of them scored on freshman Alyssa Futrell’s fielder’s choice, senior Faith Johnson’s sacrifice fly and an error on junior Anna Kate White’s grounder.
The visitors took a 4-3 lead in the second, but East Bladen rallied to take a 6-4 lead in the third. Johnson ripped a 2-out double to leftfield, White walked and junior Olivia Hollingsworth slammed a double to leftfield that scored Johnson and White. An error on the play scored Hollingsworth.
After South trimmed the margin to 6-5, the Lady Eagles added a run in the fourth. Moore-Peterson beat out a bunt single and dashed home as Smith delivered a single.
The Lady Eagles opened up a 12-5 lead with five runs in the fifth. Johnson led off with a single, and White reached base on an error. Cross walked, and Moore-Peterson reached on an error as Johnson scored.
Raynor smacked a single that scored White and Cross. McKoy reached on an error as Moore-Peterson scored. Smith laced a single to right-center that plated Raynor and McKoy scored.
South Brunswick bunched 4 hits in the sixth inning to scored four runs and slice the East lead to 12-9. Triples by Grace Rickman and Sydney Fox and Shan Sanderson’s double plus hits by Sam Trella and Katelyn Thigpen produced 5 runs in the seventh and vaulted the Lady Cougars ahead 14-12.
Smith batted 4-5 , drove in 6 runs and scored one. Raynor finished 2-4 at the plate scored 3 runs and drove in two. Moore-Peterson was also 2-4 with 3 runs scored. Johnson batted 2-4 with a double and 2 runs scored.
McKoy batted 2-5 with an rbi and 3 runs scored. Hollingsworth drilled a 2-run double and scored a run. Cross singled and scored a run, and White scored 2 runs.
Raynor pitched a complete game to get the win striking out 3 and walking only one. “Kayleigh pitched very well,” said East Bladen Coach Chase Lancaster. “The score doesn’t represent how well she pitched.”
“I am so proud of the way we kept fighting and fighting until we could pull it out,” said Lancaster. “We grew up a lot and bounced back tonight.”
Fox batted 2-3 with a triple to lead the South hitters. Sanderson finished 2-4 with a double, and Trella, Thigpen and Maria Fields all batted 2-4.
The Lady Eagles evened their record at 3-3 and will travel to St. Pauls Friday night.Share:
