Senior Miller Heustess pitched a 3-hitter, and East Bladen pounded out 12 hits en route to a 19-3 Four County Conference softball victory Friday over visiting Clinton.

Singles by Callie Sumner and Jessica Hamilton sandwiched around a Lady Eagle error produced a pair of first inning runs for Clinton.

The Lady Eagles answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning. Sophmore Kaley Smith drew a lead-off walk, and freshman Anna Kate White and junior Emily Scott were both hit by pitches. Smith darted home on a wild pitch, and White dashed home with the tying run on sophmore Faith Johnson’s infield hit.

East Bladen took control with 5 runs in the second inning. Senior Lauren Merritt swatted a single to centerfield, and freshman Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson and Smith drew walks.

Merritt scooted home on a wild pitch, and Heustess and Scott beat out bunt singles that scored Moore-Peterson and Smith. Johnson’s fielder’s choice plated Heustess, and Scott scored on an error for a 7-2 Lady Eagle lead.

A throwing error and an infield out brought home a Clinton run in the top of the third, but the Lady Eagles answered with 3 runs in the home third.

Merritt was hit by a pitch, and Moore-Peterson walked. After Smith’s sacrifice bunt, Merritt scampered home on a wild pitch. White’s ground ball plated Moore-Peterson.

Heustess walked and Scott knocked her in with a double to leftfield that grew the lead to 10-3.

Sumner replaced Hamilton in the circle for Clinton in the fourth inning, and the Lady Eagles exploded for 9 runs. Sophmore Shardajah Brown smacked a single to left to start the inning.

Freshman Olivia Hollingsworth was hit by a pitch, and Merritt laced a single to right that scored Brown and a throwing error on the play brought home Hollingsworth. Moore-Peterson drew her third walk of the game, and Merritt sprinted home on a wild pitch.

Smith drilled a triple past the leftfielder that drove in Moore-Peterson. White was hit by a pitch, and Heustess cracked a single to centerfield that scored Smith.

Johnson slammed a double to left that drove in White and Heustess. Brown cracked a single to centerfield, and Hollingsworth raked a single to left that scored Johnson. Brown raced home on a wild pitch with the final run of the inning.

Johnson batted 2-4 with a double, a run scored and 3 runs batted in. Scott turned in a 2-3 game with a double, an rbi and a run scored. Heustess batted 2-3 with 2 rbi’s and 3 runs scored.

Merritt finished 2-3 with an rbi and 3 runs scored. Brown was 2-4 at the plate and scored twice. Smith hammered an rbi triple and scored 3 runs. Hollingsworth connected for one hit, drove in a run and scored one.

Moore-Peterson scored 3 runs, and White scored 2 runs.

Heustess struck out seven and walked one. None of the three Clinton runs were earned.

“We really hit the ball tonight,” said East Bladen Coach Patty Evers. “We are getting great leadership from Miller Heustess and Emily Scott, and the girls are getting better and gaining confidence.”

The Lady Eagles evened their conference record at 1-1 and their overall record at 2-2. East Bladen will host Pender Tuesday at 6 p.m.
