East Bladen High SchoolSenior catcher Lexi Dawson batted 5-5 and drove in 8 runs to lead East Bladen’s Lady Eagles to a 21-2 non-conference softball victory at St. Pauls Wednesday.

Dawson drove in 5 runs in the first inning with a double and a triple as the Lady Eagles sent 15 batters to the plate and brought home 11 runs.

Juniors Lacey Suggs and Abby Ward were both hit by pitches to start the ball game. Dawson knocked in both runners with a double to the left-centerfield gap.

Junior Miller Heustess, sophomore Emily Scott, and sophomore Yolanda Coston all drew walks, before senior Anna Brewer reached base on an error as the East Bladen lead grew to 6-0.

Walks to freshman Faith Johnson, Suggs and Ward loaded the bases for Dawson who hammered a 3-run triple that stretched the Lady Eagle lead to 10-0. Senior Abbey Norris cracked a run-scoring single to push the lead to 11-0.

St. Pauls scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on 2 hits and an error.

The Lady Eagles exploded again for 8 more runs in the top of the third inning. Ward led off the inning with a walk, and Dawson lined a run-scoring triple to left-centerfield.

Dawson raced home on a wild pitch for a 13-2 lead, before Norris laced a single to right-field. Heustess reached base on an infield hit, and Scott belted a run-scoring single to right.

Coston reached base on an error as the lead grew to 16-2. Brewer smacked a double to right-field that brought home Scott and Coston, and Brewer eventually scored on a wild pitch to widen the gap to 19-2.

Suggs singled in the fifth inning and raced home on Dawson’s fifth hit of the game.

Scott connected for 2 hits in 3 at-bats with a run batted in for the winners. Norris batted 2-4 with an rbi. Brewer smashed the 2-run double, and Suggs and Heustess contributed one hit each to the 12-hit East Bladen attack.

Heustess pitched the first 2 innings, striking out 2 and allowing 2 runs – one earned – on 2 hits and a walk.

Suggs struck out nine of the ten batters that she faced in her 3 innings of no-hit relief and issued one walk.

East Bladen, now 2-1, will travel to Union today (Thursday) at 6 p.m. to open Four County Conference play.
