Bladen County SportsA trio of first-inning errors produced the only 2 runs of the game for East Columbus as the Lady Gators rode a one-hit pitching performance by Valerie Carter to a 2-0 non-conference softball victory over visiting West Bladen.

“Errors were the difference in the game,” said West Bladen Coach Pam Stephens. “We knew they would be tough, but we played pretty good with this young crowd that we have.”

Carter struck out 8, hit a batter and walked two. West Bladen’s Nicole Wyatt pitched a 2-hitter and struck out seven. Both runs were unearned.

Sophomore catcher Alanna Ludlum led off the fifth inning with the only hit for West Bladen.

The Lady Knights made some good defensive plays to stay close. “Morgan Sweeney had a good defensive game at shortstop,” said Coach Stephens. “Amber Bills made the play of the game, running full speed back to the fence, turning just in time and taking a home run away from them.”

It was the first loss of the season for the Lady Knights who are now 3-1. West Bladen will host Four County foe Union tonight (Tuesday) at 6 p.m.
