DUBLIN – Fairmont defeated West Bladen 10-5 Wednesday night in the Three Rivers Conference softball opener for both teams.

The Lady Tornadoes bunched four hits to score a pair of first-inning runs. Junior Mackenzie Johnson led off with a double and scored the first run.

The Lady Knights trimmed the margin to 2-1 in the home first. Sophmore Kyla Reed beat out an infield hit, advanced on senior Abby Dawson’s sacrifice bunt and raced home when sophmore catcher Alara Cashwell slammed a double off the centerfield fence.

Fairmont capitalized on a hit and two errors for a second-inning run then exploded for five runs in the fourth inning on 3 hits, an error and a walk to push the lead to 8-1.

Senior Emma McMillan slugged a solo home run in the Fairmont sixth inning, and the Tornadoes tacked on a seventh inning run.

The Lady Knights rallied in the home seventh. Freshman Alyssa Suggs drew a walk, and Reed raked a single to left field. Abby Dawson smacked a single to center that scored Suggs, and Cashwell blasted a 3-run homer over the left-centerfield fence that sliced the margin to 10-5.

“We made a come-back,” said West Bladen Coach Pam Stephens. “We will get better. This is a very young team.”

Cashwell batted 2-4 with a home run, a double and 4 runs batted in. Abby Dawson cracked the rbi single, and Reed, pitcher Madison Collins and Suggs collected one hit each.

Collins worked the first 4 innings in the circle for West, striking out six and giving up nine hits. Freshman Shelby Pharr pitched the final 3 innings for the Lady Knights, striking out five and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks.

Senior Kaylee McMillan went the distance in the circle for Fairmont and struck out six. Emma McMillan batted 2-3 with a home run, and Mya Strickland also batted 2-3 to lead the Fairmont hitters.

West Bladen will travel to Red Springs Friday night.
