Midway defeated East Bladen 13-2 Monday night in Four County Conference softball action at East.

The Lady Raiders exploded for 7 runs in the top of the first inning on 4 hits and 4 errors.

Midway looked poised to tack on more runs in the second, but Lady Eagle centerfielder Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson hauled in a long fly ball then fired the ball back in to thirdbaseman Faith Johnson to double-off one runner. Johnson then threw the ball back to second base to double off another runner and complete the triple play.

The Eagles trimmed the margin to 7-2 in the second inning as freshmen Olivia Hollingsworth and Moore-Peterson drew 2-out walks and both raced home when senior Miller Heustess walloped a double to centerfield.

Midway added 2 runs in the third, one in the fourth and 3 more in the top of the fifth to account for the final margin.

Heustess batted a perfect 3-3 with a double and 2 runs-batted-in to lead the East Bladen hitters. Catcher Emily Scott finished 2-3 at the plate, and Johnson belted the other Lady Eagle hit. Hollingsworth and Moore-Peterson scored one run each.

“Miller and Emily both swung the bat really well,” said Lady Eagle Coach Patty Evers. “They really hit the ball. We made a few plays in the field, but we are just so young.”

Hannah Jackson batted 3-3 with a double and 2 rbi’s to lead Midway. Sanajae Sankey finished 3-4 with 2 rbi’s. Hannah Lucas was also 3-4 with a double and 2 rbi’s. Winning pitcher Leah Williams batted 2-4 with a triple and an rbi.

The Lady Eagles, now 2-6 in league play and 3-7 overall, will travel to Pender today (Tuesday).
