SOUTHPORT – South Brunswick capitalized on 4 West Bladen errors, 3 walks and 2 hits to score 8 runs in the 5th inning, to overcome a 5-1 Lady Knight lead and post a 9-7 non-conference victory Wednesday.
Freshman Allison Woodruff knocked in an early Lady Cougar run with a double, but the Lady Knights rallied with 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Junior Rylee Chadwick walked, and junior Kylie Durden sliced a double to left field. Senior Jessalynn Vendrick’s fielder’s choice plated Chadwick, and junior Madison Taylor’s squeeze bunt scored Durden with the go-ahead run.
West Bladen tacked on 3 more runs in the 5th inning. Sophomore Lena Trinidad laced a single to center field, and Durden swatted a single to left. Vendrick smashed a single to center field that scored Trinidad. Junior Kaitlynn Brisson drilled a single to right-center that brought home Durden and Vendrick and padded the Lady Knight lead to 5-1.
After the 3 walks and 4 errors, sophomore Emilee Flaverney capped the 8-run South 5th inning with a 2-run single and stretched the Lady Cougar lead to 9-5.
Durden walloped a triple to begin the Knight 7th inning, and Vendrick slammed a double to right-center field that scored Durden. Brisson ripped a double to left that scored Vendrick and trimmed the lead to 9-7.
Durden batted 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and 3 runs scored. Vendrick finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored. Trinidad was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Brisson batted 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs. Taylor added a hit and a RBI, and Chadwick walked and scored a run.
Chadwick started and pitched 4.1 innings for West allowing 8 runs – 2 earned – on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out one. Durden relieved and worked 1.2 innings giving up an unearned run on a hit and a walk.
The Lady Knights, now 6-9 overall, will host St. Pauls Friday night to complete a suspended game then play the regularly scheduled game.
