South Robeson snapped a 3-3 tie with 2 runs in the fifth inning en route to a 6-3 non-conference softball victory over visiting West Bladen Thursday.

Lead-off batter Halei Chavis singled to start the home fifth but was gunned down attempting to steal by Lady Knight catcher Alanna Ludlum. It was the second runner that Ludlum had thrown out in the game and third one this season.

Amber Johnson walked, stole second and advanced on a wild pitch, before Destiny Strickland drove her in with a single. An opposite-field single by Emerral Warrell and Harmony Oxendine’s infield hit loaded the bases, before Strickland scored on a fielder’s choice for a 5-3 Lady Mustang lead.

Aterria Quick worked a one-out walk in the South Robeson sixth and scored one out later on Johnson’s single.

Junior Laikyn Pait drew a one-out walk, and Ludlum raked a single through the left side in the top of the seventh, but Oxendine retired the next 2 batters to preserve the victory.

Oxendine who transferred from Fairmont this season gave up 8 hits, 3 walks and 3 runs, while striking out eight. Junior Sophia Singletary made her first start of the season for West and went the distance giving up 11 hits and 4 walks, while striking out two.

Johnson batted 3-3 with a triple and 2 runs batted in to lead the South Robeson hitters. Cangela Murphy finished 2-3 at the plate with a double and a rbi. Strickland had a hit and 2 rbi’s.

Ludlum batted 2-4 with a double to lead the West Bladen hitters. Pait cracked a 2-run single, and juniors Kassidy Anderson, Logan Autry and Kathryn Schultz and freshmen Conner Brisson and Carley Dawson all connected for one single each.

South Robeson took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Quick led off with a single but was thrown out stealing by Ludlum. Chavis walked and circled the bases when Johnson tripled into the left field corner. An infield out plated Johnson.

Oxendine walked in the fourth and courtesy runner Jennifer Lambert eventually scored on Micaela Hunt’s single for a 3-0 Lady Mustang lead.

Schultz lined a one-out single to rightfield in the West Bladen fifth. Anderson smacked a single to right, and Singletary walked to load the bases. Pait ripped a single to left that drove in Schultz and Anderson, and Singletary scored the tying run when the leftfielder let the ball get past her.

Ludlum blasted a double off of the left-centerfield fence, but Oxendine worked out of the jam with a pair of strike-outs.

“The girls are working hard and getting better,” said West Bladen Coach Joey Autry. “That was a really good team that we played. They will be one of the better teams in this area.”

The Lady Knights are now 1-1 and will host St. Pauls Saturday at 2 p.m.
