ST PAULS – Sophmore Brianna Brewer pitched a 6-hitter and struck out 11 to lead St. Pauls to a 3-2 Three Rivers Conference softball victory over short-handed West Bladen Tuesday night.

Coach Pam Stephens’ Lady Knights were without their catcher and centerfielder due to illness and a school trip, and those two players are also 2 of their top 3 hitters. “We still should have won the game,” said Coach Stephens. “But that is how it goes sometimes.”

The Lady Knights grabbed the early lead as senior Abby Dawson cracked a one-out single to centerfield, stole second and raced home when her sister, Carley Dawson, slammed a double to left-centerfield.

St. Pauls scored twice in the third inning. Singles by Kaitlyn Locklear and Kourtney Sanchious sandwiched around an error produced one run, and a passed ball put the Lady Bulldogs up 2-1.

West Bladen tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth. Senior Madison Collins drew a walk, and freshman Alyssa Suggs smacked a single to rightfield. Senior Elizabeth Allbright knocked in Natalie Ludlum, the courtesy runner for Collins, with a single to centerfield.

Consecutive 2-out singles in the sixth inning by Locklear, Destinee Lowery and Sanchious produced the eventual winning run.

Suggs batted 2-3 to lead the West Bladen hitters. Carley Dawson ripped the run-scoring double, and Abby Dawson, Allbright and senior Alise Pait connected for one hit each.

Collins pitched a complete game 5-hitter for the Lady Knights, striking out 6 and walking one. Only one of the St. Pauls runs were earned.

Locklear batted 2-3 and scored twice for St. Pauls, and Sanchious was also 2-3 with 2 runs batted in.

West Bladen will host South Columbus Friday night.
