West Bladen’s Lady Knights exploded for 15 runs in the top of the second inning and defeated Union 22-1 Tuesday on the 3-inning mercy rule in the Four County Conference softball opener for both teams at Union.

Winning pitcher Sophia Singletary batted 3-3 with 2 runs batted in, and her courtesy runner, Patience Parker, scored 3 runs then knocked in a run with a pinch-hit single in the third inning.

Junior Laikyn Pait finished 2-2 at the plate, knocked in 3 runs and scored 4 runs. Freshman Conner Brisson batted 2-4, drove in 2 runs and scored two.

Juniors Alanna Ludlum and Kathryn Schultz and freshman Carley Dawson added one hit each. Ludlum and juniors Kassidy Anderson and Logan Autry scored 3 runs each. Dawson scored 2 runs, and Schultz and junior Jenna Dove scored one run each.

Schulz and Dove knocked in 2 runs each, and Anderson, Ludlum and Autry drove in one run each.

Anderson and Ludlum drew walks to begin the Lady Knight first inning. Pait and Singletary belted singles, and Autry reached on an error. All five of them came around to score as West Bladen took a 5-0 lead.

Anderson reached base on an error to begin the second.  Pait and Singletary cracked singles, and Autry and Dawson drew walks. Brisson smacked a single, and Schultz, Dove and Anderson were all hit by pitches.

Ludlum walked, and Pait was hit by a pitch. Singletary swatted a single, and Autry was hit by a pitch. Dawson, Brisson and Schultz delivered back-to back-to back singles. The 15 runs pushed the West lead to 20-0.

Ludlum and Parker sandwiched singles around a Pait walk in the top of the third as Ludlum and Pait scored to up the count to 22-0.

Alison Alphin led off the Union third with a single and raced home on sophmore Lindsey Ammons’ double.

Singletary allowed one run on 3 hits, 4 hit batters and a walk while striking out four as she picked up her first pitching victory of the season.

Coach Joey Autry’s Lady Knights improved to 2-3 with the victory and will travel to Teachey to play Wallace-Rose Hill Friday at 6 p.m.
