BLADENBORO – West Bladen exploded for 23 runs in the 3rd inning and cruised to a 28-0 Southeastern Athletic Conference softball victory over St. Pauls Friday night in the 2nd game of a doubleheader. The Lady Knights won the 1st game 21-2.
The state softball record for most runs in an inning is 45 set by Bunn in the second inning of a 68-3 win against Weldon on March 16, 1999, according to the N.C. High School Athletic Association record book. There are nine times that a team scored 25 runs or more in an inning.
Thirteen walks, 9 West Bladen hits, 3 St. Pauls errors and 3 hit batters enabled the Lady Knights to send 28 batters to the plate in the pivotal 3rd inning. For the game Lady Bulldog pitching walked 20 batters, hit 4 and gave up 12 hits.
Junior Rylee Chadwick blasted a 3-run triple in the 3rd inning, batted 3-for-3, scored 3 runs and had 4 runs batted in to lead the West hitters. Junior Madison Taylor was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with 2 walks, 3 runs scored and an RBI. Junior Kylie Durden batted 2-for-4 with 2 walks, a 2-run single in the 3rd inning, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
Sophomore Gracie Faircloth finished 2-for-3 at the plate with 3 runs scored. Junior Mackenzie Singletary belted a 2-run single in the 3rd inning, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. Senior Jessalynn Vendrick singled, walked 3 times, scored 4 runs and had an RBI. Sophomore Lena Trinidad walked 3 times and scored 3 runs.
Junior Kaitlynn Brisson walked, was hit by a pitch and scored 4 runs. Sophomore Emmee Ward singled and scored twice, and freshman Holland Davis scored twice.
Chadwick started and pitched 3 innings to pick up the win, striking out 4, walked one and gave up one hit. Taylor relieved and worked 2 innings allowing a hit, 2 walks, a hit batter and striking out one.
Madison Williams and Hailey Ray connected for 1 hit each for St. Pauls.
Coach Pam Stephens’ Lady Knights improved to 7-1 in SAC-7 play and are 8-9 overall. West Bladen will travel to league-leading Midway Tuesday night.
