WILMINGTON – Senior Hannah Douglas smacked a 1-out single that drove in senior Sinaiya Gonzalez with the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning and gave Wilmington Ashley a 5-4 non-conference softball victory over East Bladen Monday night.

Gonzalez legged out a bunt single to start the 9th, stole 2nd base and scored on Douglas’ single to center field. Senior Deidre Donovan pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless 2-hit relief to pick up the win. Junior Emerson Lee worked 5.2 innings in the circle and gave up all 4 Lady Eagle runs.

Lady Eagle senior Karli Priest went the distance in the circle and allowed 5 runs – 3 earned – on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.

The Screaming Eagles turned a bunt, an error and a wild pitch into an early run. Sophomore Ragan Martin singled, advanced on a sacrifice and senior Makenna Carter’s single then scored on a fielder’s choice in the 2nd inning to put Ashley up 2-0.

Priest lined a single to center field to begin the East 3rd inning, and freshman Cabria Baldwin beat out an infield hit. Senior Laura Davisson knocked in Priest with a single to right-center field and an error on the play plated Baldwin. Davisson darted home on a wild pitch for a 3-2 Lady Eagle lead.

A passed 3rd strike, an error and a fielder’s choice produced the tying run in the Ashley half of the third, and sophomore Sawyer Rigdon’s single to right pushed the Screaming Eagles ahead 4-3.

Sophomore Martha Simmons’ beat out an infield hit with 2 out in the East 6th inning, and consecutive walks to sophomores Gabriella Bray and Mollie Tolar loaded the bases, before senior AnnaGrey Heustess walked to force home Simmons with the tying run.

Simmons batted 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Lady Eagle hitters. Baldwin finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored, and Davisson was also 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Priest singled and scored a run, and Heustess added an RBI.

Carter batted 2-for-4 to lead the Ashley hitters. Gonzalez was 2-for-5 with 2 bunt singles and 2 runs scored. Douglas delivered the walk-off single, and Rigdon and Martin added 1 hit each with Rigdon picking up an RBI.

East Bladen, now 4-8, will travel to North Brunswick Thursday night.
