Southeastern Regional Medical Center’s Special Care Nursery has expanded its services to include highly specialized care for babies born up to 10 weeks early. Previously, it was only equipped to care for babies born up to six weeks ahead of time. Newborns arriving sooner were stabilized, then transferred to hospitals miles away.
This expansion means families experience less disruption during what is already a stressful time. Parents can stay near their babies as they receive specialized care, without having to travel.
This welcome change is possible because of a new partnership between Southeastern Health, SRMC, and Coastal Children’s Services (CCS), a group of pediatric subspecialists.
The partnership brought to our nursery a highly skilled team of doctors and nurse practitioners who specialize in neonatology, which is the care of sick newborns.

Therese Bertolette, R.N., N.N.P., attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she received her nursing degree in 1973. She earned certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner in 1993 from Georgetown University Medical Center.
Kathryn Colacchio, M.D., was born and raised in Essex, Vt. She received her bachelor’s degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va., and completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. After residency she completed her fellowship in Neonatal-perinatal medicine from Yale University in New Haven, Conn. She is board certified in pediatrics and neonatology. Dr. Colacchio’s interests include quality improvement, patient safety and simulation training.
Fasil Mohomed, M.D., is a pediatric and neonatal hospitalist employed through a partnership with CCS and Lumberton Children’s Clinic. A native of Trinidad, West Indies, Dr. Mohomed currently lives in Lumberton and has practiced at SRMC since 2010. He completed a bachelor’s degree in biology at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., in 1998. He earned a medical degree from Spartan Health Sciences University at Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, West Indies in 2003. His clinical rotations were completed at Yale-affiliated hospitals in Connecticut and Cook County Hospitals in Chicago. He completed a pediatrics residency in a Level III NICU at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Ill. in 2006. He also completed a pediatric critical care fellowship in 2009 which included training at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, D.C. Children’s Cardiac ICU as well as in the pediatric critical care unit at Johns Hopkins University. He is board certified in pediatrics.
Fernando Moya, M.D., CEO of CCS, attended medical school and completed his pediatric residency at the Catholic University of Chile. Following the completion of his neonatal-perinatal fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Moya continued to work there for three years as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. He is board certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. His research interests include lung maturation and surfactant use, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and necrotizing enterocolitis.
Anthony Tackman, M.D., was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and attended Michigan State University for his undergraduate studies, receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology. He received his medical degree from MSU College of Human Medicine and then completed a residency in pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship training in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Ind., performing research in placental fetomaternal glucose kinetics. Dr. Tackman’s professional interests are neurodevelopment and neonatal hematology.
Paula Roach, N.N.P., a Lumberton resident, earned an associate nursing degree from University of South Carolina in 1986. She completed neonatal nurse practitioner training at University Medical Center Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1991. She also earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2006 and a master’s degree in nursing/neonatal nurse practitioner from State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2013. She is board certified.
Now that this team is in place, expert care is available 24/7 to help fragile babies. So if an unexpected problem arises, a specialist can step in right away.
Every baby also has a carefully developed nutrition plan and feeding schedule to promote steady growth. SRMC’s nurses, many of whom have decades of experience, provide loving, around-the-clock care.
