The Bladen County Cooperative Extension Office has new leadership. Becky Spearman was recently named as the new County Extension Director.

“I’m excited. We have a really good staff. We do a lot of things for the citizens of Bladen County,” said Spearman of her new role.

She said her new role will allow her to get to see more of the programs offered at Cooperative Extension and to be more involved with the things agents are doing in the community.

Spearman has worked at the Bladen County Cooperative Extension Office as a Livestock Agent for 14 years and prior to that she was employed with Murphy Brown at a farm in White Oak for six and one-half years.

Spearman, who is originally from Tennessee, said her first job following college was with the Murphy Brown company which brought her to Bladen County. She said she learned about the Livestock Agent position through a co-worker and she applied for the position.

Spearman said of applying for the livestock agent position, “It wasn’t something I really thought about.”

She added that once she began her duties as livestock agent 14 years ago, she found she enjoyed the job. Spearman said she enjoys assisting farmers with their livestock herds and assisting children with their livestock projects.

Spearman said Cooperative Extension offers programming and assistance for farmers as well as homeowners. The Cooperative Extension provides research-based information on a wide range of topics from programs on how to operate a farm to program related to horticulture.

Spearman earned her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Tennessee and her Master’s Degree in Agricultural Education from NC State University. She is married to Mark Spearman.
