Sport Thoughts While Shaving

I enjoyed the weekend sports lineup….basketball, golf, a full slate of NASCAR racing…college basketball..and more including a moving tribute to Coach Dean Smith…

Thought I would check on some of the area folks, some I know and some I do not.  Some I mentioned recently and some I have not……

William McGirt, a former baseball player and golfer from Fairmont, now a PGA regular had a good weekend…earned just over $110,000 in the Northern Trust tournament in California…A bogey on the last hole cost him a little over $30,000. His trip out west has been good…a little less than $200,000 in two weeks…

The trip to Daytona Beach for the Ricky Benton Racing team was good.  David Gilliland drove the #92 Ford truck to a 6th place finish and a pay check just short of $23,000.  The truck race is like the number 3 series after the 2 auto divisions….Bladenboro’s Michael Hester is the crew chief for the team.

Following the NASCAR theme,  former East Bladen and App State football star, Kevin Richardson is one of the crew members on the winning car piloted by Ryan Reed in the Xfinity series at Daytona Beach Saturday.  Richardson is a member of the Roush Fenway Racing pit crew team.  Incidentally, 21 year old Reed suffers from diabetes and was told 4 years ago he would never race again…Guess he proved them wrong….

Ann Hancock, another of my heroes…saw her Wingate ladies basketball team stumble a little over the weekend…Losing 63-60 to Lincoln Memorial University in a game played at Harrogate, Tenn.  The Bulldogs are still in first place with an overall record of 19-8 and 17-3 in SAC play.  The Bulldogs travel to Newberry for a Wednesday contest.  Wingate is ‘gunning’ for another 20 win season in Hancock’s third year at the helm..

DJ Mason, former West Bladen basketball star, continues to have a good year with the Camels of Campbell U.  He is averaging nearly 12 points a game and about 5 1/2 rebounds a game for the 6-6 Junior   The Clarkton native has played in 29 games and his playing time averages about 27 minutes a game, up from around 20 minutes per game a year ago.

Jazmine Kemp continues her consistent play at UNC Pembroke.  She has started all 25 games this year and is averaging about 13 points per game.  Jazmine is a junior and has many honors including All-Academic team and Presidential Honor Roll…She is averaging over 32 minutes of playing time per game…

Sara Myatt, 6-2 forward plays on the UNC-Wilmington team.  She graduated from Southern Alamance, played on the Queens College team (Charlotte) 3 years before joining the UNCW team.  Many of her family members live in the Elizabethtown-Garland area…

Michael Inman of Tar Heel is beginning his senior year at Methodist University.  The former West Bladen Knight pitched in the second game against Covenant recently recording 2 strike outs to end the game and left one runner on base.
