NCDHHS Releases High School and Youth Sports Guidelines

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services published their guidelines for the possible resumption of high school and youth sports Friday afternoon.

NCHSAA Press Conference Scheduled for Tuesday

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has scheduled a press conference for Tuesday at 4 p.m. to discuss their plans for moving toward athletic activity resumption based on the NC Department of Health and Human Service guidelines for high school and youth sports that were released late Friday. Gabe Barber Named Winner of 2020 Wilburn Clary Medal Scholarship

East Bladen senior Gabe Barber has been named as a winner of the 2020 Wilburn Clary Medal Scholarship that is given by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. He will receive a one-time $2,000 scholarship and a commemorative plaque.

The scholarship is given annually to recognize an outstanding male and female student-athlete that participates in at least two NCHSAA-sanctioned sports. Kayla Yang of Clinton was the female winner. READ MORE



Lacey Suggs Named UNC Wilmington Most Valuable Player

WILMINGTON – Lacey Suggs was named the Most Valuable Player for UNC Wilmington’s women’s basketball team Friday as the 2019-2020 Lady Seahawks’ basketball awards were published via twitter.

Suggs scored in double figures in 22 of 30 games for the Lady Seahawks and averaged 12.8 points per game. The East Bladen grad grabbed a team-high 5.2 rebounds per game and was second on the team in steals with 53. READ MORE



Larrell Murchison Agrees to 4-Year Contract With Titans

Larrell Murchison and the Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms on a four-year contract valued at $3.57 million according to the EnterSports Management firm that represents Murchison.

The Titans selected Murchison in the fifth round of the National Football League draft with the 174th overall pick making him the first Bladen County athlete to be drafted by the NFL. READ MORE



NCHSAA Could Allow Summer Workouts But Resumption of Athletics Is Uncertain

CHAPEL HILL – The N. C. High School Athletic Association could allow summer workouts to begin June 1 when the NCHSAA’s dead period on athletic activities is set to expire. Athletic activities were suspended by the NCHSAA on March 13 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However state and local governments including local school districts must give their approval before summer workouts or any other athletic activities can resume. READ MORE



Nolan Bryant Commits to Methodist Baseball

It didn’t take West Bladen senior Nolan Bryant long to make up his mind about his college choice and Friday he made that decision public through the West Bladen Athletics twitter account. He will be playing baseball next season for the Methodist Monarchs in Fayetteville.

“I liked the campus. The layout and the way the buildings are all close together,” said Bryant. “ I met with Coach (Tom) Austin and a couple of the players and really liked them.” READ MORE



Lumberton Declared NCHSAA Class 4A Basketball State Co-Champions

Lumberton’s Pirates have declared the Class 4A 2020 Men’s Basketball State Co-Champions Thursday by the NCHSAA Board of Directors following their Spring Meeting. The meeting was held via a virtual platform.

The Pirates are coached by former South Columbus coach Bryant Edwards who is the son of Bladen County native Worley Edwards. READ MORE



Larrell Murchison Becomes First Bladen NFL Draftee

ELIZABETHTOWN – Just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday the call came on Larrell Murchison’s cell phone. The Tennessee Titans were informing Larrell that he was about to be the first Bladen County football player to ever be drafted in the National Football League draft.

As soon as Larrell’s family realized this was the THE CALL, Milton and Glenda Murchison’s house (his parents) exploded in celebration. READ MORE

Larrell Murchison Expected To Be Bladen’s 1st NFL Draftee

ELIZABETHTOWN – Elizabethtown’s Larrell Murchison is expected to be the first Bladen County football player ever to be drafted by the National Football League when the league holds its annual draft Thursday night thru Saturday.

“I am definitely excited,” said Murchison Tuesday. “Only 2 more days – I am counting them down.” READ MORE


UNC-Pembroke To Join Conference Carolinas in 2021-2022

GREENVILLE, SC – The Conference Carolinas presidents have voted unanimously in favor of adding UNC-Pembroke and Francis Marion University to their NCAA Division II conference. 

UNC-Pembroke was a member of the Conference Carolinas from 1976-1992 before leaving to join NCAA Division II. READ MORE


Gabe Barber to Play in NCSCA Clash of the Carolinas

East Bladen senior Gabe Barber has been chosen to play in the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association’s Clash of the Carolinas that is scheduled for late June.

Barber, the Three Rivers Conference Player of the Year and a NCSCA All-State selection, scored 24 goals, dished out 22 assists and totaled 423 steals for the TRC champion Eagles. READ MORE


Brandon Council Commits to Play Football at Auburn

West Bladen grad Brandon Council announced Thursday night that he will continue his football and academic career at Auburn University next season as a graduate transfer.

Council, a 6-4, 325-pound offensive lineman, had been pursued by a large number of Division I schools including offers from defending national champion Louisiana State, Baylor, Southern California, Texas Tech, Indiana, Illinois, Houston, Rutgers, Missouri and Iowa State. READ MORE


Sayaun Dent Named National Player of the Year

CHARLOTTE -The awards keep rolling in for West Bladen grad Sayaun Dent who Wednesday was named the 2019-20 NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Player of the Year presented by TicketSmarter.

Dent led the Sandhills Community College Flyers to the NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship scoring 27 points in the title game and leading the team in points (17.8) and rebounds (8) per game. READ MORE
