No Recreation or School Sporting Events Scheduled
Recreation Baseball and Softball to Resume Friday
After a 5-month delay due to the coronavirus, Bladen County Recreation’s baseball and softball programs will begin play Friday at County Park with games scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
Provisions in place to help combat the coronavirus include: umpires will be positioned in the field to call balls and strikes and will have a mask to wear when in conversation with coaches and players, there will be no post-game handshakes and coaches will have sanitizer for players equipment. Martha Simmons Named MVP of the Battle of the Rings
FAYETTEVILLE – Bladen County’s Martha Simmons was named Most Valuable Player in the ‘Battle of the Rings’ Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament Saturday as she led her Sandhills Freedom team to the championship. READ MORE
Titans Improve to 5-0 With Overtime Win
NASHVILLE, TN – Derrick Henry scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in overtime Sunday to lift the unbeaten Tennessee Titans to a 42-36 National Football League victory over Houston. Elizabethtown’s Larrell Murchison played in his fourth game of the season on the defensive line for the winners. READ MORE
Turnovers Costly for Auburn at South Carolina
COLUMBIA, SC – South Carolina turned a trio of pass interceptions into 21 points en route to a 30-22 Southeastern Conference football victory over Auburn Saturday.
Former West Bladen star Brandon Council started and played the entire game at right guard for the Tigers. Council had several key blocks on the Tigers 75-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter that resulted in a 16-7 Auburn lead. READ MORE
Football: Harrells Christian 48, Hickory Grove Christian 14
HARRELLS – Junior Devin Gardner ran for 4 touchdowns Friday night to lead Harrells Christian Academy to a 48-14 non-conference football victory over Hickory Grove Christian from Charlotte.
Harrells Christian, now 4-0 on the season, will travel to Raleigh Friday night to battle Ravenscroft Academy in a Big East Conference game. READ MORE
Golf News From Vineyard Golf At White Lake
Two super senior golfers from Vineyard Golf entered the Carolina Golf Association CGA Super Senior 65+ Championship recently and came in tied for 12th place in the event.
Some low scores shot recently at Vineyard Golf were: Luke Gooden 74. John Williams 74. Stacy Owen 73, Don Salasbury 74, Rick Marvin 75 and Mickey Brisson 75. READ MORE
Abigail Madden Commits to Belmont Abbey Softball
West Bladen Softball has announced on their Facebook page that senior Abigail Madden has committed to play softball next season at Belmont Abbey College.
Madden, batted .500 with 8 hits, 2 doubles and a triple as the Lady Knights won 3 of their 4 games before COVID-19 halted the 2020 season. READ MORE
Brandon Council’s Auburn Tigers Edge Arkansas
AUBURN, AL – Anders Carlson booted a 39-yard field goal with 7 seconds left that lifted Auburn to a 30-28 Southeastern Conference football victory over Arkansas on a rainy Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Tar Heel native Brandon Council started at right guard for the Tigers and played the entire game on the offensive line. He also saw time at left guard and right tackle. READ MORE

HARRELLS – Harrells Christian survived a late rally Friday night and defeated the Carolina Bearcats from Charlotte 42-37 in non-conference football action. READ MORE
Three Rivers Conference Fall and Winter Sports Schedules Released
The Three Rivers Conference athletic directors met Wednesday and completed their schedules for fall and winter sports including cross country, volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ soccer and football.

Chris Cromartie Will Return to Campbell For Extra Season
Elizabethtown native Chris Cromartie not only received the opportunity to play 4 football games on national television for Campbell this fall, but the shortened 4 game schedule did not cost him a year of eligibility.
The son of Leon and Sheilah Cromartie, Chris will graduate in the spring of 2021 with a degree in business administration, but will still have the fall of 2021 to complete his senior year on the football field. READ MORE

RALEIGH – Senior Devin Gardner scored a trio of second-half touchdowns Friday night as Harrells Christian pulled away for a 23-0 victory over North Raleigh Christian.
Harrells Christian improved to 2-0 with the win and will host the Carolina Bearcats from Charlotte Friday night at 7:30. READ MORE
Patty Evers Receives Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Award
East Bladen Athletic Director Patty Evers has been honored with the Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Award. This is the 11th year that the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors has presented the award.
“I am very honored to receive an award named after Charlie Adams!” said Evers. “He did so much for student athletes and was always an advocate for coaches.” READ MORE

Football: Harrells Christian 7, Trinity Christian 6
FAYETTEVILLE – Sophomore Walker Ward recovered a fumble in the end zone for the game’s only touchdown Monday night as Harrells Christian edged Trinity Christian 7-6 in a rainy NCISAA football opener.
Harrells senior Issac Underwood ran the ball down to the goal line before fumbling into the end zone leading to Ward’s touchdown recovery with 3:03 left in the first quarter. READ MORE
Bob Lewis Signs Book, Greets Former Players And Friends
Former East Bladen football coach Bob Lewis was at Leinwands on Saturday to sign copies of his autobiography “My Story.” The book contains Lewis’ recollections from his 42 years of coaching varsity football that included stops at East Bladen, Pender, Clinton, Harrells Christian and Whiteville.
Lewis, a native of Burgaw, began his coaching career with a middle school job in Clinton before moving to the varsity level at East Bladen in 1972. He remained there through 1979 before leaving to take the head football job at Pender. READ MORE
East Bladen Soccer Teams Receive Team Academic Awards
Both East Bladen soccer teams –girls and boys – have received the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2018-2019 school year.
“I am extremely proud of the kids,” said Jay Raynor who coaches both East Bladen soccer teams. “This honor is what high school sports is all about, being a student athlete. It’s about being a student first and making sure to do it in the classroom before you set foot on the field. These kids are just as committed in the classroom as they are on the field.” READ MORE

East Bladen 3rd, West Bladen 5th in Final Wells Fargo Cup Standings
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the final standings for the 2019-2020 Wells Fargo Conference Cup for each conference across the state Wednesday. East Bladen finished third in the Three Rivers Conference final standings, and West Bladen was fifth. READ MORE
Lefrederick Wooten Committs to Fayetteville Tech Baseball
East Bladen senior Lefrederick Wooten announced on his twitter account @FredyWooten that he is verbally committed to play baseball in the 2021-2022 season at Fayetteville Technical Community College.
Before the coronavirus halted the 2020 season, Wooten pitched a 4-hitter and struck out 6 batters in the East Bladen opener against Whiteville. At the plate he knocked in 4 runs in just 3 games. READ MORE
Kayleigh Raynor, Zach Meares Announce College Commitments
East Bladen High School announced on their twitter account @EBHSathletics Tuesday that seniors Kayleigh Raynor and Zach Meares will be continuing their academic and athletic careers at the college level.
Raynor, the ace pitcher for the Lady Eagles since her freshman year, has decided to play softball at Methodist University. Meares, a standout pitcher and shortstop for the Eagles, has chosen UNC-Pembroke. READ MORE

Coach Russell Priest Remembered For His Service, Loyalty & Friendship

Loyal, a good friend, a good citizen, tough, a servant, funny, a great father and husband – those were some of the words used Friday as friends and colleagues remembered East Bladen Coach and Bladen County Commissioner Russell Priest who passed away Thursday.
“His loyalty – to me, the athletic program and the school – that’s what stands out the most about Russell,” said longtime East Bladen football Coach Lenon Fisher. READ MORE
