Coach Russell Priest Remembered For His Service, Loyalty & Friendship

Loyal, a good friend, a good citizen, tough, a servant, funny, a great father and husband – those were some of the words used Friday as friends and colleagues remembered East Bladen Coach and Bladen County Commissioner Russell Priest who passed away Thursday.
 
“His loyalty – to me, the athletic program and the school – that’s what stands out the most about Russell,” said longtime East Bladen football Coach Lenon Fisher.  READ MORE



NCHSAA Provides Phase 2 Guidance for Conditioning & Workouts

The NCHSAA Board of Directors has voted to provide Phase Two guidance to member schools regarding summer conditioning and workout activities. However local school administrators have the final say on workouts, and over half the school systems in the state, including Bladen County, have not yet approved summer workouts.

The Phase Two guidelines for the schools that are conducting workouts will become effective on Aug. 3. READ MORE



Mississippi Eliminates Hope Mills From World Series

GUNTERSVILLE, AL – Kosciusko, Mississippi pitching limited Hope Mills to 2 hits Sunday and claimed a 4-0 victory in an elimination game in the Dixie Pre-Majors World Series.

Tennessee Outlasts Hope Mills 10-6 in Dixie Pre-Majors World Series

GUNTERSVILLE, AL – Portland, Tennessee outscored Hope Mills 7-4 over the final 3 innings to claim a 10-6 victory in the second round of the Dixie Pre-Majors World Series Satuday night.

Hope Mills, now 1-1 in the series, will play Mississippi Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) in an elimination game. READ MORE



Bladen Trio Keys Hope Mills Win In World Series

GUNTERSVILLE, AL – Bladen County’s Zach Meares, Freddy Wooten and Brady Hollingsworth sparked Hope Mills to a 13-3 victory over Sevier County, Arkansas Saturday in the opening round of the Dixie Pre-Majors World Series.

Wooten pitched 3 innings to pick up the win, allowing 3 runs on a hit, 2 walks and 4 hit batsman while striking out one. At the plate Wooten batted 2-4 with a double, 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored. READ MORE



Kayla Thompson Participates In Arkansas Golf Tournament

Kayla Thompson played this week in the Central Arkansas Open Golf Tournament in Conway, Ark.

Thompson failed to place in the money when she shot 83-76-76=235. The winning score, 215, was shot by Amanda Kim. Top place paid $7,500.



Gabe Barber Named United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American

East Bladen grad Gabe Barber continued to pile up the postseason awards Tuesday as he was notified of his selection to the United Soccer Coaches High School Scholar All-America Team.

Barber led the Eagles to their third straight Three Rivers Conference championship this season by scoring 24 goals and dishing out 22 assists. He finished his career with 50 goals and 50 assists as East Bladen reached the 3rd round of the NCHSAA State Playoffs. READ MORE



Kayla Thompson Misses Cut In Golf Tournament

Bladen County’s golf pro Kayla Thompson missed the cut this week in the Texarkana Children’s Charities Open Golf Tournament played at the Northridge Country Club in Texarkana, Texas.

Thompson’s next tournament will be the Central Arkansas Open to be played July 21-24 at Centennial Valley Golf Club in Conway, Arkansas. READ MORE

Chasity Melvin, Whose Father Is Bladen Pastor, Named WNBA Assistant Coach

Former NC State star Chasity Melvin, who led coach Kay Yow’s women’s basketball team to the Final Four for the first time in school history in 1998, has been hired as an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.

Her father is the Rev. Jimmy Melvin, who is the pastor of St. John’s AME Zion Church located between Elizabethtown and White Lake. READ MORE


Sayaun Dent Committs to UNC Pembroke Basketball

West Bladen grad Sayaun Dent, the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Player of the Year, committed Thursday to continue his basketball career next season at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Dent led Sandhills Community College to the 2020 NJCAA Division III national championship, scoring 27 points in the title game and being named the Most Valuable Player in the national tournament. READ MORE


Michael Campbell, Chris Savage Win Tight Line Bass Tournament

Michael Campbell and Chris Savage were the big winners Thursday evening in the Tight Line Addiction Baits Big Bass Battle at Lake Waccamaw.

Campbell won the top money award for the biggest fish with a 6-pound, 12-ounce bass. READ MORE
