Gabriel Barber Honored By United Soccer Coaches

East Bladen’s Gabriel Barber was honored Saturday as the United Soccer Coaches conducted their annual ceremony for their 2020 All-Americans. Barber was recognized as a 2020 Scholar All-American. READ MORE

East Bladen Basketball Schedule Change

East Bladen High SchoolThe East Bladen at Whiteville junior varsity basketball game that was scheduled for Saturday, January 23rd has been postponed. The East Bladen varsity girls will travel to Whiteville for a 12:30 game on Jan. 23rd followed by the varsity boys game between the 2 schools.



East Bladen, West Bladen in 10-team conference in 2nd NCHSAA realignment draft plan

East Bladen and West Bladen high schools currently are members of the nine-school Three Rivers 2-A/1-A Conference.

If the the NC High School Athletic Association’s second realignment draft plan released Thursday is passed, the two Bladen County will be in an all 2-A 10-school conference. The four Columbus County schools will be replaced by Clinton, East Duplin, James Kenan, Midway and Wallace-Rose Hill. READ MORE



Three Bladen Seniors Named All-Conference Volleyball

West Bladen seniors Sidnee Walters and Ashlyn Cox and East Bladen senior Katie Evans have all been named to the 2020-2021 All-Three Rivers Conference volleyball team.

Walters pounded in 91 kills, 45 service points, 11 aces, 5 blocks and had 15 digs in 9 games. Cox led the Lady Knights with 102 assists and 99 service points in 10 games. Evans fired in a team-high 91 service points, 8 aces, had 13 digs in 11 games. READ MORE



Tyre Boykin Transfers to UNC-Pembroke

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke men’s basketball coach Drew Richards has announced the signing of former West Bladen star and Missouri-Kansas City transfer Tyre Boykin.

Boykin, the 2019-2020 Three Rivers Conference Player of the Year, has already enrolled in classes at UNCP but will have to sit out the 2020-2021 season due to NCAA transfer rules. READ MORE



Boys Basketball: East Bladen 65, South Columbus 15

ELIZABETHTOWN – Sophomore guard Malcom Bolden and senior center Javant McDowell combined for 34 points Tuesday night as East Bladen’s Eagles rolled to a 65-15 boys basketball victory over South Columbus.

Coach Aking Elting’s Eagles improved to 3-0 and will open Three Rivers Conference play Saturday, January 23rd at Whiteville at `3:30 p.m. READ MORE

Girls Basketball: West Bladen 38, West Columbus 29

West Bladen High School LogoBLADENBORO – Sophomore Rylee Chadwick and junior Hannah Pait teamed up for 18 points Tuesday as West Bladen raced to leads of 10-1 and 25-6 en route to a 38-29 girls basket ball victory over West Columbus.

Coach Brian McCleney’s Lady Knights improved to 2-0 and will return to action Friday, January 22nd at Fairmont in their Three Rivers Conference opener. READ MORE



JV Basketball: East Bladen 45, South Columbus 37

ELIZABETHTOWN – Jacob Nixon poured in 23 points Tuesday to lead East Bladen to a 45-37 victory over South Columbus in junior varsity boys’ basketball action.

Coach Aking Elting’s Eagles improved to 2-1 on the season and will open Three Rivers Conference play Saturday, January 23rd at Whiteville at 12:30 p.m. READ MORE

East Bladen Girls, West Bladen Boys Shut Down by COVID

BasketballBoth East Bladen’s girls and West Bladen’s boys have had their basketball seasons interrupted by the coronavirus.

Seven of the Lady Eagles were exposed to a non-basketball individual that tested positive for COVID-19. Three team members and Coach Patty Evers were not exposed. West Bladen’s boys played East Columbus Friday night and East Columbus has had a positive test, therefore the Knights and Gators are both quarantined for 2 weeks. Tennessee Eliminated in NFL Play-offs

NASHVILLE, TN – Quarterback Lamar Jackson ran for 136 yards and a touchdown and threw for 179 yards as the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Tennessee Titans 20-13 Sunday in the opening round of the National Football League Play-offs.

Former East Bladen star Larrell Murchison, who played in his 1st ever play-off game and 11th game of the season for the Titans, teamed up with Kevin Byard on a tackle of the Ravens Gus Edwards with 1:25 left in the 4th quarter. It was Murchison’s sixth tackle of the season. READ MORE



Girls Basketball: West Bladen 41, East Columbus 11

BLADENBORO – Sophomores Rylee Chadwick and Lainey Autry combined for 23 points to lead West Bladen to a 41-11 season-opening girls basketball victory over East Columbus Friday.

Chadwick topped the Lady Knights with 14 points, and Autry finished with 9. READ MORE

Boys Basketball: East Columbus 63, West Bladen 59

BLADENBORO – J. J. Faulkner pumped in 22 points Friday night as East Columbus withstood a furious West Bladen rally and escaped with a 63-59 boys’ basketball victory.

The Gators held a 56-50 lead when Knight freshman Landon Stanley drained a 3-point shot then stole the ball and banked in a runner to close the gap to 56-55. READ MORE

A.J. Smith, Cate DeVane Win Cross Country Races

WHITEVILLE – East Bladen’s A. J. Smith and Cate DeVane won the boys and girls cross country races Thursday in the final Three Rivers Conference meet of the year. West Bladen’s girls won the girls team event.

Smith, a senior, won his 5th consecutive race with a time of 20:06. DeVane, a sophomore, won for the 3rd time this season with a time of 26:30. READ MORE


2020 Sports Year in Review – November & December

First there wasn’t going to be high school basketball for Bladen teams, then it was back. East Bladen’s A. J. Smith (pictured) and West Bladen’s girls team dominated the cross country races. East Bladen beat West in volleyball. Larrell Murchison was in town helping the needy, Harrell Christian played for a state football championship, and John Bowen had a big game for UNCW against East Carolina. READ MORE

East Bladen’s Patty Evers (pictured) received a big award from the NCHSAA. Larrell Murchison began his pro football career. Brandon Council was the leader of Auburn’s offensive line until he suffered an injury. Chris Cromartie anchored the defensive line for Campbell. Coach Bob Lewis returned to Elizabethtown for a book signing. Trevor Lesane will play another year of baseball at Erskine. READ MORE

The passing of East Bladen Coach and County Commissioner Russell Priest in July overshadowed the announcements of plans by both the NCHSAA and NCISAA to resume sports.

Gabe Barber received a national award, Sayaun Dent committed to continue his basketball career at UNC-Pembroke, and a trio of East Bladen baseball players went to the Dixie Pre-Majors World Series with Hope Mills. READ MORE


2020 Sports Year in Review – May & June

Larrell Murchison signed a big contract. Lacey Suggs and Gabe Barber (pictured) received prestigious awards. The Bladen high schools and middle schools announced athletic awards for the sports that played before COVID-19. Nolan Bryant committed to Methodist.

All the coronavirus news was depressing, but the feature article about the Murchison brothers and Coach Dabo Sweeney’s video message to a West Bladen student brightened our days. READ MORE


2020 Sports Year in Review – April

Larrell Murchison became Bladen County’s first NFL draftee. Brandon Council announced that he had transferred to Auburn University of the Southeastern Conference. The awards continued to pile up for Gabe Barber and Sayaun Dent, but nobody was playing anything on the fields or courts as the public schools were closed for in-person learning. READ MORE


2020 Sports Year in Review – March

North Carolina schools were closed in mid-March by the governor and that effectively ended the scholastic sports seasons after a bare minimum of games. However Three Rivers Conference Players of the Year awards both went to Bladen players, and former Bladen stars Sayaun Dent and Lacey Suggs won big awards. Dent even won a national championship. Bladen County SportsBoth Bladen County girls basketball teams reached the state playoffs, after they played a classic overtime game in their final meeting of the regular season. Several Bladen athletes playing in college had outstanding seasons, and two female basketball legends from the 1980’s were honored by their respective colleges. READ MORE


2020 Sports Year in Review – January

Before COVID-19 shutdown most of the 2020 sports seasons, East Bladen’s boys and girls won their first meetings of the season with West Bladen. Patience Ward signed to play basketball in college, and Gabe Barber received another soccer honor.

Senior Tyre Boykin received recognition from state and national media for scoring all of West Bladen’s 41 points in a 60-41 loss to East Bladen in the first meeting of the season between the two rivals. READ MORE

Coach Russell Priest Remembered For His Service, Loyalty & Friendship

Loyal, a good friend, a good citizen, tough, a servant, funny, a great father and husband – those were some of the words used Friday as friends and colleagues remembered East Bladen Coach and Bladen County Commissioner Russell Priest who passed away Thursday.
 
“His loyalty – to me, the athletic program and the school – that’s what stands out the most about Russell,” said longtime East Bladen football Coach Lenon Fisher.  READ MORE
