Representative William Brisson; Bladen County Commissioner Peterson switch parties

Staff report

The North Carolina House of Representatives and the Bladen County Board of Commissioners will have another member for the Republican Party in their midst.

Representative William Brisson and Bladen County Commissioner Chairman Charles Ray Peterson both switched their voter registrations to Republican from Democrat on Wednesday afternoon.

Rep. Brisson, who serves in NC House District 22 and Commissioner Peterson serves as the Chairman of the Bladen County Board of Commissioners.

“Representative Brisson has been a hard-working and conservative voice in our state legislature for quite some time now. We are elated with his decision to switch his registration to a political party that will better serve himself and his constituents. I look forward to working with him to spread Republican values and make the 22nd district the best it can be,” said NCGOP Chairman Robin Hayes.

Rep. Brisson has served six terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives in Raleigh as a registered Democrat. The change of party affiliation will give the Republicans 75 of 120 seats in the NC House.

With Chairman Peterson’s change of voter registration, that brings the total number of seats held by Republicans on the Bladen County Board of Commissioners to five.

“I’ve been a Democrat for my entire political career. I’ve prayed about it, I’ve talked to others about it, and I felt like it was the right thing to do at this time,” said Chairman Peterson.

Chairman Peterson is in his fourth term as a Bladen County Commissioner and prior to that, he served on the Bladen County Board of Education for 12 years. Chairman Peterson said all of those years, he was a registered Democrat.

Both Rep. Brisson and Chairman Peterson will file to seek re-election in 2018 as Republican candidates.
