JuneAtkinsonState Superintendent June Atkinson will join the U.S. Army Golden Knights official aerial parachute demonstration team Thursday morning, April 21, in a tandem parachute jump. The jump will occur at Maxton Airport, near Laurinburg at approximately 8:30 a.m.

State Superintendent Atkinson said she appreciates the opportunity to experience some of the activities North Carolina’s military personnel experience, especially during April which is Month of the Military Child.

North Carolina is home to the third largest military population in the United States, including 110,000 military children (ages 0-18). All branches of the military – Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy – are represented in North Carolina. There are more than 46,000 school-age children (ages 5-18) of active duty military personnel and approximately 18,000 children of reserve and National Guard personnel in North Carolina. Also, all 100 counties in North Carolina are home to someone who serves in the military.

The Golden Knights Tandem Team is responsible for bringing the exhilarating experience of free fall to soldiers and other VIPs all over the country. Some of their notable passengers include President George H.W. Bush, Chuck Norris, Bill Murray, Geraldo Rivera, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and Tiger Woods. The team performs tandem jumps at their training drop zone in Laurinburg, N.C. They also travel to tandem camps around the country.
