Statement from Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections, on the bipartisan House Bill 1169, which was filed today in the N.C. House:

“We appreciate that the General Assembly has taken our recommendations to heart and put forward a bill that ensures accessible, safe and secure elections in 2020. This is a positive step forward for North Carolina voters. We look forward to continuing to work with state lawmakers as this bill moves through the legislative process.”

Background: On March 26, the State Board of Elections released a list of recommendations to ensure accessible, safe and secure elections amid the COVID-10 pandemic.

“The NCGOP applauds the Rules Commission’s unanimous rejection of the election law changes proposed by the State Board of Elections because they are unnecessary, ambiguous, and exceed the Board’s authority. We strongly encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote in whichever way they feel comfortable, including absentee voting, early voting and voting on election day – all of which are currently allowed under North Carolina law.”
