NC Wildlife Resources CommissionThe North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission held the first of several public hearings scheduled to take place across the state regarding proposed changes to state regulations regarding gamelands, management of wildlife and fishing.

NC Wildlife Resources Commission spokesperson Jodie Owen said that about 50 people were in attendance at the hearing which was held at Bladen Community College on Tuesday evening.

Tuesday’s meeting of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission was the first in a series of public hearings regarding the proposed changes. The Commission is holding the hearings in an attempt to gather public input regarding the changes.

Owen said that those who did not attend the meeting still have time to submit their comments. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission has scheduled more hearings across the state. For a complete a schedule of all hearing locations and times, click here.

Owen said you can also submit comments by visiting the NC Wildlife Resources Commission website and clicking on the scrolling icon labeled “Submit Comments 2016-17 Proposed Regulations Public Comments” and follow the instructions.

Owen said if you have lengthy comments or would like to call attention to another issue or propose some other type of regulations; you can submit your written comments via mail to: NC Wildlife commission Office, Attention Proposed Regulations Committee, 1701 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1701.

The proposed changes include allowing the sale of raw deer hides which are collected after the deer is either legally harvested or killed by a motor vehicle. Processed hides require a Trophy Sale permit to be sold legally, according to the Commission.

Another proposed change regards how a bear cub is defined. Currently, regulations define a bear cub as any bear weighing less than 50 pounds. The proposed change would define a bear cub as any bear weighing less than 75 pounds. This change would align Wildlife Commission rules with newly adopted state regulations.
