LAKE WACCAMAW – The N.C. Department of Transportation closed a flooded portion of N.C. 211 in Columbus County late Thursday afternoon.

Crews closed the route, which is a popular way to reach the beaches, just south of N.C. 214 in the Bolton area, east of Lake Waccamaw. Employees will monitor the N.C. 211 closure and inspect it on Friday after floodwaters recede to ensure it’s safe to reopen it.

In the meantime, people should use N.C. 87 as an alternate.

Several roads in Columbus County experienced partial flooding on Thursday because of the rain system that has hovered over North Carolina this week. In most cases, the roads reopened hours later after the water had receded.

People should go to DriveNC.gov to check road conditions before traveling Friday.
