Monday evening’s Bladen County GOP Club meeting offered area Republicans an opportunity to review
and contrast the differences between the secular-socialist agenda of Barack Obama, with that of the
accomplishment-driven presidency of Donald Trump. Nationwide, it is clear that conservatives are
energized by the Trump approach to national security, education, health care, economic growth, and
realistic government reform. Equally clear, it is apparent that there are divisive forces within the
Washington establishment, the mainstream media, and an entrenched, liberal/progressive bureaucracy
that will stop at nothing to oppose the president at every turn.
Club members agree—it is time for Republicans nationwide to better understand what constitutional
conservativism really means, and for Bladen County Republicans to understand how to articulate what it
really means to be a Republican in what has historically been a strong Democrat county. A review of
Board of Election data indicates that, while there is a growing base of declared Republicans in the
county, there are still far too many unaffiliated voters who simply did not understand, at the time that
they registered to vote, that they were not required to register as Democrat or Unaffiliated in order to
vote in this county. Bladen County needs a strong, 2-party system—not an unchallenged, single-party
system which offers no contrast in ideas and approach to governance.
Several business leaders within the Bladen County GOP Club pointed out that the president’s aggressive,
pro-American trade policy, combined with less regulation and lower taxes, will promote a dramatic
increase in economic growth. In fact, one club member asserted that there is strong research to
demonstrate that if the minimum wage were to be made tax-free, it would have an immediate impact
on local, state, and Federal economies. Noting that there has been a strong push nation-wide to
increase the minimum wage, this club member noted that, instead, if each worker were allowed to
make minimum wage tax-free, it would allow them to have more additional disposable income to cover
many of the increases included in the cost of living. The additional disposable income would go directly
into the economy to help taxpayers pay for the necessities they need daily, resulting in more revenue
for businesses, and more tax revenue from the taxes incurred on purchases.
It was noted that, if Congress decides to increase the minimum wage, it will only hurt businesses,
employees, and consumers. Businesses will be forced to cut staff and hours, while at the same time
increasing prices. By the time those issues are factored in, employees will have returned to, or will be
below, the current minimum wage at which they started! In other words, raising the minimum wage
would actually become a wage reduction. The solution, instead, would be to make the minimum wage
tax-free (more info about this is available at: www.taxfreeminimumwage.com ).
